Abstract
859,096. Preventing corrosion. VOLKSWERFT STRALSUND VEB. March 12, 1958, No. 7922/58. Class 123(1) In an impressed current cathodic protection system especially for ships' hulls, the protective current is automatically switched on when the potential between the anode and the hull falls to a preset minimum and is switched off when it rises to a preset maximum. The anode 1 which is of a material such as iron, lead alloy, carbon or platinum and a coppercopper sulphate measuring electrode 2 are mounted in a streamlined body 3 of synthetic plastic material mounted on the hull 4. A voltmeter 6 constantly measures the potential between the electrode 2 and the hull. If the potential falls the voltmeter pointer 5 contacts a terminal 7 and a circuit including a relay 8 and a battery 12 is closed. The relay closes a switch 9 and a flow of protective current is established, an ammeter 10 measuring the current then being applied through the anode 1. As the measured potential rises the pointer 5 eventually contacts a terminal 13 whereupon the relay 8 is again energised to open the switch 9 and stop the current flow. In a modification, a single electrode is used alternately as a measuring electrode and as a protective anode.
