A stand for photographic apparatus with at least one leg adjustable in length, a lower tubular member 4 being axially movable inside an upper tubular member 1 and adjustably held by an annular ring 17 biased into an inclined clamping position around member 4 by a dish spring 16, the ring 17 being released on pivoting a lever 11 at the upper end of the stand downwards against a spring 13, is characterized in that the lever 11 depresses an arcuate section push rod 8 resting on the ring 17 and disposed in the annular space between the members 1, 4. The lever 11 may be replaced by horizontal and vertical spring-loaded slides (23, 26) Fig. 4 (not shown) which co-operate by inclined surfaces (25), a disc (28) on the slide (26) engaging the push rod 8. The dish spring 16 may be replaced by a compression spring (29) Fig. 5 (not shown). A tubular member 5 located within member 4 normally moves with member 4, but on release of a spring clamp 5a, 5b can be moved relative to member 4.
