Abstract

1,257,947. Phosphating. HOOKER CHEMICAL CORP. Oct.29, 1969 [Oct.31, 1968], No. 53076/69. Heading C7U. Metal surfaces are treated with an acidic solution containing zinc and phosphate ions and 0À01 to 1 wt per cent of an additive which is starch, a derivative of starch, or a polysaccharide or polysaccharide derivative derived from starch. Additives mentioned are amylose, amylopectin, dextrin, starch, starch derivatives and polysaccharides produced by acid decomposition of these, oxidized starch, starch phosphate, nitrostarch, starch sulphate, carboxyl starch, hydroxyethyl starch, aminoethyl starch, alkyl starch and aryl starch. The surface treated may be Fe, steel, Zn, Zn alloy, e.g. galvanized steel; the treatment solution may have pH 2-3, temperature 40-70‹ C., and is applied by spraying for 3-10 seconds or immersion for 5 seconds to 3 minutes, and may contain H 3 PO 4 , HNO 3 , ZnO, NiCO 3 , H 2 SiF 6 , HF, the additive, water, and optionally a polyphosphate, e.g. Na metaphosphate.
