Abstract

1,257,541. Electro-deposition of metal. NORTON CO. March 20, 1969 [April 3, 1968], No. 14772/69. Heading C7B. During electro-deposition of metal, either anode or cathode is subjected to continuous activation by contact with small, hard, spaced particles e. g. of resin, ceramic, glass or walnut shell, which are supported by a matrix, e.g. mesh foam or sponge, and moved under pressure relative to the electrode surface; the movement also serving to bring fresh electrolyte to said surface. Various embodiments are given. That shown in Fig.3 includes a rotating anode disc 30 having attached thereto a mesh screen 34 having hard particles 36 adhered thereto. Electrolyte is supplied between said anode and workpiece 25 via nozzle 41. As shown in Fig. 5 tube 68 is electro-deposited on mandrel 62 using anode 65 in the form of a perforated split ring which may be expanded during electro-deposition and which carries the abrasive mesh on its inner surface, e. g. copper may be deposited using a lead/ antimony anode. Electro-winning may be carried out using a continuous belt activator Fig. 6, (not shown), e.g. for electro-refining of copper, or of tin, for example using a web of glass fibre as activator coated with phenolic resin and tin sulphate/sulphuric acid electrolyte. The process may be used in deposition of nickel, copper, tin and aluminium, e.g. from a solution of aluminium chloride. Deposition may also be carried out from non-aqueous solution.
