Abstract

1378703 Lead electrode BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 19 April 1972 [22 April 1971] 18071/72 Heading H1B [Also in Division C7] PbO 2 is electrolytically coated on to pretreated Ti to make an electrode, e.g. for use as a positive plate in primary or secondary batteries. In the pretreatment, seeds of one or more finely divided materials selected from Pt, Pd, Au, magnetite, graphite and PbO 2 are applied to the Ti surface by a non-electrochemical method. The PbO 2 is anodically deposited from an aqueous lead (II) salt solution. The Ti may be degreased with benzene, polished with quartz or corundum slurry and scoured with oxalic acid. The seeds may be applied from a suspension thereof in benzene, isopropanol or acetone by brushing or spraying therewith or may be applied in the form of a dry powder which is fixed on the Ti by rubbing, brushing or buffing. The anodic deposition of PbO 2 may be from an aqueous lead (II) nitrate or perchlorate solution containing nitric or perchloric acid using a Cu cathode. HNO 3 formed during the deposition may be neutralized by adding basic lead carbonate so that the pH does not exceed 4. The Ti may be in the form of plane or curved plates or sheeting which may be perforated, expanded metal, netting or rods. The PbO 2 coated Ti may be polished with a slurry of carborundum, corundum or quartz powder. A primary or secondary battery may comprise a PbO 2 coated Ti plate placed between two Pb plates in perchloric acid.
