Abstract

1393115 Coating cutting tools with Ru and/or Os INTERNATIONAL NICKEL Ltd 26 May 1972 [28 May 1971] 17992/71 Heading C7B A tool suitable for cutting metal, such as a drill or cutting tip, has a coating of Ru or Os or an alloy of these two elements on at least the surfaces adjacent to the cutting edge or each such edge. The coating may have been formed by electro-deposition; plasma-spraying; or vapour deposition; or by applying a slurry of powder and sintering; or by applying a Ru bearing liquid, such as the reaction product of a ruthenium halide with an ether, with subsequent decomposition to metal by heating. The coating may be formed while a hard metal tool is being made in that it may be applied, e.g. by plasma spraying, to a compact of the carbide and binder metal before this is sintered, or that a layer or Ru or Os may be put on a compact and compacted, again before the compact is sintered. Prior to electro-depositing Ru or Os on a tool of hard metal (which is essentially carbide and a binder metal of the Fe group, e.g. Co), the tool may be flash coated with Au or Pd. Electrolytic deposition may be from aqueous electrolytes containing (1) (NH4)3 [Ru 2 NCl 8 (H 2 O) 2 ] and (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 and sulphamic acid at a pH of 1À5, temperature of 70‹C and current density of 1 to 2 amp/dm2 or (2) potassium hexachlorosmate, KCl, KHSO 4 and KOH at a pH of 1À2 to 1À5, temperature of 70‹C and current density of 1 to 2 amps/dm<SP>2</SP>. Hard metal and high speed steel of specified compositions may be electro-plated with Ru. Specification 1393116 is referred to.
