Abstract

1421818 Continuous electro-forming nickel belt XEROX CORP 4 May 1973 [8 May 1972] 21261/73 Heading C7B A thin, flexible ductile seamless Ni belt, serving as a support for an electrically photo-sensitive image retention surface e.g. comprising vitreous Se in electrostatographic reproduction apparatus, is electro-formed electro-depositing Ni from an aqueous Ni sulphanate solution on to a rotating cathode support mandrel, e.g. an Al core coated with a Cr layer, the anode being of Ni e.g. contained in an annular basket, and cooling the Ni coated mandrel to effect parting of the Ni belt due to different coefficients of thermal expansion. The solution is agitated to continuously expose the mandrel to fresh solution e.g. to flow across the mandrel surface at a rate of 4 to 10 linear feet/sec, and maintained within the electro-forming zone at 140-160‹F and a stable equilibrium composition comprising 12 to 15 oz/gal total Ni, 0.11 to 0.23 mole/gal NiX2.6H20 (where X is Cl, Br or F) preferably 1.6 to 1.7 oz/gal NiCl 2 .6H 2 O and 4.5 to 6 oz/gal H 3 BO 3 . The solution from the electroforming zone is electrolytically purified e.g. using a steel cathode plate and anode baskets containing Ti tubes to remove metallic and organic impurities, continuously charged with 1 to 2 x 10<SP>-4</SP> mole of a stress reducing agent, e.g. Na sulphobenzimide optionally mixed with 2-methylbenzenesulphonamide, per mole of Ni electro-deposited, optionally charged with up to 0.0014 oz/gal surfactant e.g. Na lauryl sulphate and de-ionized water, filtered to remove any solid impurities, cooled and recycled. The C.D. is at least 200 A.S.F. of cathode surface. The pH is preferably 3.9 to 4.1.
