Abstract

777,591. Electrodeposition of tungsten and/or molybdenum. MULLARD RADIO VALVE CO., Ltd. Aug. 10, 1955 [Sept. 27, 1954], No. 27915/54. Class 41. Tungsten and/or molybdenum are plated from a fused bath comprising (1) alkali metal tungstates and/or molybdates, (2) alkali metal borates or phosphates, and (3) tungstic and/or molybdic oxide. The preferred alkali metal salts are the mixed lithium-sodium salts and optimum results are obtained in the temperature range 800-950‹ C. Any inert anode may be used but preferably one of the same metal as is being plated is used. Plating may be done on various basis metals or on carbon but nickel or one of the precious metals at least as a surface coating is desirable. The preferred material for the cell is platinum, zirconia or graphite. Plating may be effected by direct or periodic reverse plating, the current density being 0.5-100 amps./dm.<SP>2</SP> in the first case and 100-1000 amps./dm.<SP>2</SP> in both directions in the second case. Shaped bases may be plated and the base subsequently dissolved out.
