Abstract

1,200,410. Electro-deposition of metal matrix containing dispersed particles. NSU MOTORENWERKE A.G. and WANKEL G.m.b.H. Sept.9, 1968 [Sept. 9, 1967; Dec.16, 1967], No.42753/68. Heading C7B. A process for the electro-deposition of a metal matrix containing dispersed particles on the surface of a workpiece comprises depositing a layer of zinc on the surface and, using an electrolytic nickel bath containing solid particles, first depositing a thin layer on to the zinc coating with the bath still so that the particles therein are settled out, and then depositing a further layer which consists of a nickel matrix containing dispersed hard particles, the particles being maintained in suspension in the bath during this stage by agitation of the bath. The particles may be of silicon carbide, silicon dioxide, aluminium oxide, tungsten carbide or boron carbide. For deposition of the above described coating upon the inner surfaces of epitrochoidal engine housings, a plurality of housings 13 separated by spacers 16 are secured rigidly by bolts 18 to frame 12 which is positioned within tank 11, containing the electro-plating bath pivotally supported from bridging member 19. Agitation of the bath is provided by passage of compressed air into the bath via pipe 22, and the bath may be circulated via pipes 24, 27 by means of pump 23 to provide further agitation and for regeneration at 26. The anode 21 comprises a basket e.g. of titanium containing pieces of nickel. The basket is shaped to conform to the inner shape of the workpieces 13 and may have the shape of two intersecting cylindrical sections Fig.4, (not shown). The nickel pieces within the basket may be contained within a bag of fine mesh weave to retain small pieces of nickel and impurity. Two conductors extend upwards from the bottom of the anode basket and parallel thereto positioned so as to produce a uniform electric field. If the workpieces are attached to frame 12 without using spacers 16 so that their inner surfaces form a tube, the pipe 27 is located so that the bath may be circulated between the anode and workpiece during operation of the bath. The nickel plating bath may contain nickel sulphamate, nickel chloride, boric acid and saccharine.
