Locating subaqueous sounds.-Apparatus for determining the direction of a subaqueous sound comprises a light disk or diaphragm surrounded by a ring of dense material, the vibrations of the disk being communicated through a lever to a microphone situated in a watertight chamber. The water has access to both sides of the diaphragm. The observed sound is a maximum when the disk faces the source of sound. Fig. 1 shows a diaphragm C clamped in a massive ring A. A microphone J in a chamber H in the ring A, closed by screw plugs I, is carried on a light lever F. The lever F passes in water-tight manner through a gland; its outer end being connected to the diaphragm by a wire E. The gland may be replaced by a diaphragm carrying the lever. Other forms of combined water-tight joint and pivoted mounting are described. Fig. 2 shows a disk b in a ring a; a lever c soldered to the disk passes through a water-tight joint d allowing pivotal movement and supports a microphone g within a chamber e. The ring a is clamped in a divided ring h of dense material, Fig. 5. In a modification, the lever c is bifurcated and embraces the disk, being secured thereto at the centre.
