Subaqueous sound signals.-The diaphragm 1 on the side of the ship is vibrated by the rotating valve 7, which places the chamber at the back of the diaphragm in communication alternately with the highpressure pipe 5 and the low - pressure pipe 6. The valve consists of a disk with a series of holes 8 near its circumference. The diaphragm is tensioned by the ring 10 and screws 11. Air, steam, or other fluid may be used. Code signalling may be obtained by means of a valve in the pressure passage.
