Microphones a n d variable - resistance transmitters.-A device for detecting sounds, particularly for subaqueous use, comprises a felt or like ring containing carbon granules carried by one end of a metal tongue and pressed against a contact disk supported by a diaphragm or by a rod projecting from a diaphragm. The felt ring f, Fig. 1, containing granules, is carried by a metal tongue d' and caused to bear, with a pressure adjustable by a set-screw k , against a contact disk c carried by a diaphragm a. In a modification, Fig. 2, the tongue d is carried by a diaphragm a<2> and the contact disk c by a rod j projecting from a diaphragm a<1>. In a further modification, three mutually perpendicular diaphragms are used, two of which have rods jointly supporting the contact disk, the metal tongue being supported by the third diaphragm.
