142,096. Williams, R. L. April 25, 1918, [Convention date]. Detecting subaqueous sounds.-A microphone D is mounted on a thick diaphragm C of rubber or other aperiodic material. In hydrophones, to which the invention is specially applicable, means are provided for preventing inequality of pressure on the two sides of the diaphragm. In the form shown in Fig. 1, this is effected by clamping the diaphragm in the middle of a closed spherical casing A, B, with water in one hemisphere and air in the other. In a second arrangement, shown in Fig. 2, one side of the diaphragm is exposed direct to the external water, and the air in the space at the back of the diaphragm is pumped up to the same pressure as that of the external water e.t the depth at which the hydrophone is to be used. The diaphragm C may be of square or other non-circular form.
