125,401. Rudge - Whitworth, Ltd., Pugh, J. V., and Pountney, F. June 29, 1916. Projectile fuses.-Relates to percussion fuses of the kind comprising a metal tape which has a weighted end and is wound over centrifugal safety means normally preventing contact between a needle and percussion cap, a protective cover being screwed over the end of the fuse and removed before the projectile is placed in the gun. According to the invention, the inner end of the tape is so formed that it can only be applied to the mechanism when the tape is correctly positioned for winding in the right direction; and further, the weighted end is so formed that it does not prematurely leave the groove in which it is wound when the cover is removed. In the fuse shown in Fig. 1, the tape m is wound in a groove h so as to hold a bolt l in position between an inertia pellet c and a firing-needle f. The bolt has a flat face covering the percussion cap d, and a groove in which the needle engages is formed in the other face. A centrifugal bolt j engaging in known manner with an inertia detent k may also be provided. The tape, shown separately in Fig. 4, has its inner end n turned up at right-angles so as to engage in a slot, (not shown), formed in the fuse body and thus correctly position the tape. The weight at the other end is slit at q, so that it presses resiliently against the sides of the groove h. Fig. 3 shows another construction of fuse, having an inertia pellet c in combination with a direct-action striker-needle t. The tape m in this case holds in position a split collar u which is normally inserted under the head of the needle. A shearing-pin v is provided as an additional safety-device. The pellet c is held at " safe " by a centrifugal bolt l<2> and detent k, the bolt projecting through a tube c<1> attached to the pellet. Specification 125,400 is referred to.
