Abstract

125,118. Owens, J. S., and Wells, E. May 26, 1916. Projectile fuses.-Relates to percussion fuses which are sensitive to impact in more than one direction. According to the invention, a striker ib surrounded by an annular weight within the fuse body, the striker having a. collar which bears against the base of the weight, so that a forward or tilting movement of the weight forces the striker against a percussion cap. In the fuse shown in Fig. 1, the striker consists of a tube 4 containing priming-composition and having a disk 9 thereon. The striker is normally pressed back by a spring 10 so that the disk 9 bears against the base of a heavy tube 7 surrounding the striker. When impact occurs, the striker 4 is moved forward against a cap 5 by the tilting, or under the direct pressure of the weight 7. To render the fuse sensitive to a fall upon its base, the plug 3 containing the cap 5 may be made slidable axially. The percussion cap may be mounted on the striker. Various forms of safety devices may be used, such as a split-pin passing through a recess in the fuse body and through the striker. The safety pin may be acted upon by a spring in such a way as to be automatically withdrawn from engagement with the striker after being released by the set-back of a ring or other locking-device on discharge of the projectile. Figs. 3 and 4 show examples of such arrangements. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the safety pin 11, acted on by a spring 13, is normally locked in the operative position by a hand-operated pin 14 and an inertia ring 16. In the modification shown in Fig. 4. the member which locks the safety pin 11 is a bolt 21 which sets back on discharge and disengages itself from lugs 19, but is prevented from falling away from the fuse and thus freeing the pin 11 until the projectile has passed out of the gun 18. In a further construction, the safety device comprises a split-pin which cannot re-engage winth the striker after being withdrawn; complete withdrawal of the pin is prevented by a stop. The Provisional Specification describes also other modified arrangements of the safety pin, and states that, in one construction, the pin may be withdrawn by a spring-operated lever. The provision of a sliding member which normally locks the safety pin and is withdrawn by means of a weight attached by a cord is also described.
