Abstract
125,100. Charmier, F. W., and Curtis, W. May 15, 1916. Projectile fuses.- Relates to percussion fuses for handgrenades, and consists mainly in the arrangement of a ball 11 or like symmetrical member centrally between two .supports 12, 17 in such a manner that the ball becomes displaced laterally on impact, and one support 17 carrying a detonator 24 is thrust by a spring 22 against a firing-pin 26. The several parts of the fuse are carried within a tube 7 with an enlargement 7<1> around the ball. The firing-pin 26 projects into the tube 7 from a clip 25, which is sprung over the tube. The support 12 is secured to the tube 7 by an indentation 7<2>. Both supports are coned to form small seats 15, 19 for the ball. The ball is held at safe by a cagle 10, which is withdrawn by a spring 16 when an external restraining-lever 28 is released, the lever being normally locked by a. pin 30 with finger-ring 31. In a modification, the support 12 is not fixed, but is pressed inwards by a spring, the pressure of which is partly relieved when the restraining-lever is released; in this case, the safety cage 10 may be dispensed with, the normally strong spring pressure of the support 12 being relied upon to prevent displacement of the ball before the grenade is thrown, whereas, on impact, this spring pressure having, been reduced, the ball can move. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 105,932.
