Abstract

126,388. Rudge - Whitworth, Ltd., Pugh, J. V., and Pountney, F. Jan. 29, 1917. Projectile fuses.-Relates to percussion fuses of the kind in which the inertia pellet is normally held against forward movement by a centrifugal bolt, locked by a surrounding resilient 'detent which is displaced rearwardly when the projectile is discharged. According to the invention, the inertia pellet c is contained in a hollow cylinder or sleeve m, having a firing-pin n at one end and engaging with a cavity in the fuse-body a at the other end, the centrifugal bolt g penetrating the sleeve m and pellet c and being retained in position by a resilient member j surrounding the sleeve. In the fuse shown in Fig. 1, the firing- pin n is mounted on a cover u which prevents complete withdrawal of the bolt g from the hole into which it passes. Fig. 3 shows a modification in which the firing-pin n is secured directly to the end of the sleeve m, which is screwed on to the fuse-body a. In this construction, the detent j is in the form of a coiled spring. In a further modification (not shown), the outer end of the sleeve m is closed by a plate carrying the firing-pin and held in place by a shoulder on the cover u. Specification, 126,387 is referred to. The Provisional Specification also states that the sleeve containing the inertia pellet may be in one piece with the fuse-body, and the outer cover may be dispensed with. In this case, a damp-excluding washer may be placed under the head of the bolt, and the detent may be soldered or otherwise secured in position during transport.
