Abstract
13,405. Coleman, E. W. April 4, 1916. Projectiles ; projectile fuses.-Relates to percussion fuses for grenades and bombs, and consists mainly in the combination, of a spring striker with a sear adapted, on impact in any direction, to be pulled by a ball connected to the sear by a flexible connexion. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the spring striker 12 is normally held cocked by a blade spring 9 and a sear 13 in engagement under a shoulder 8 on the striker, and the sear 13 is carried by a bellcrank lever 4 pivoted at 5 and connected by a string 21 to a ball 6, a pin 20 secured to the lever 4 being guided by a slot in the cover 23 and normally locked in a groove in the outer part 15 of the striker, over which a vane-wheel 24 is screwed. During the flight of the bomb, the vane-wheel unscrews itself and releases the striker 12, which ignites a.percussion cap 29 and explodes the bomb through the intermediary of a powder charge 28 and a detonator 27. In a modification especially intended for aircraft, the vane-wheel is retained by a further extension of the striker after the wheel has unscrewed from the part 15. In another modification, the lever 4 is released, when the bomb is discharged, by the set-back of a spring bolt by inertia. In still another modification intended for hand-grenades, as shown in Fig. 5, the detonator is held in place by a swivelled plate 40, and the lever 4 is locked by a spring pin 34, which comes off when an external lever 37 is released from the hand throwing the grenade, this external lever pivoting about the point 25 and being normally locked by a pin 38, which is removed by hand before the grenade is thrown. In a modification of this arrangement, the pin 34 is replaced by a pin 47, Fig. 10, formed with a spring tongue 49 to hold it in place until it is pulled out by a wire hook 48 retained by the hand throwing the grenade.
