Abstract
2139. Still & Sons, W. M., and Still, E. H. Feb. 10. Projectiles; projectile fuses. - Relates to percussion and time-fuses for grenades, and consists in releasing the striker by the action of throwing the grenade previous to the grenade being released from the hand, and in locking the striker of both hand and gun grenades by one or more springs which release the striker, when disengaged from a holding-device which moves in relation to the grenade at the moment this is thrown or discharged. In the hand grenade shown in Fig. 1, the firing-pin 6 is screwed to a sleeve handle 9 and locked by leaf springs 11. When the grenade is grasped by the handle and thrown, the shank 3 of the grenade moves slightly out of the handle, owing to the inertia of the grenade, and the springs 11 are released and swing out. As soon as the grenade leaves the hand of the thrower, the firing-pin is driven by its spring 7 against the percussion cap 5 and ignites the time-fuse 4. During transport, the fuse is held at safe by a pin 13. In a modification for percussion fuses of grenades fired from a gun, the springs 11 are released by the set-back of a sleeve on discharge, and release the firing-pin, which is held by a spring away from the percussion cap during flight until impact.
