Abstract

188,377. Armstrong, Whitworth, & Co., Sir W. G., and Taylor, H. G. Aug. 4, 1921. Projectile fuzes.-Relates to delay-action percussion base fuzes of the kind in which two pellets, one carrying the needle and the other the detonator, are kept apart during retardation due to impact and penetration, and are brought together to fire the fuse after such retardation. According to the invention, the pellets B, D, Fig. 1, are kept apart by springs F which are attached to the pellet D and are confined behind a shoulder on the pellet B by a bush G screwed into the body A of the fuse. When the projectile is discharged from a gun, the pressure of the propelling gases drives a piston H inwards, releasing plugs B<3>, D<3>, so that during, flight. radial bolts B<1>, D<1> may move under centrifugal force out cf recesses B<2>, D<2>, and thereby unlock the pellets B, D. On impact, the pellets move forward together, compressing a spring I. The return of the pellet D is prevented by a spring catch K snapping into the recess D<2>; the pellet B on the other hand is freed by the springs F opening cut in the space beyond the bush G. When retardation ceases, after the projectile has passed through the armour plate, the compressed spring I throws the pellet B back, thrusting the pin C on to the detonator E, Fig. 3. The flash from the detonator is transmitted through passages L, M to powder pellets N leading to the burster charge O.
