Abstract

23,787. Hale, F. M. Dec. 9. Projectile fuses.-Relates to shells intended to be dropped from aircraft upon submarines, and consists in a form of double-impact fuse having the same object as that described in Specification 23,662/14. The detonator 2, which is under the control of an arming-device, such as any of those described in Specifications 11,394/13, 2057/14, 22,601/14, or 22,602/14, is held by spring catches 3 until impact upon the water occurs, whereupon a sleeve 4, which normally holds the spring catches in engagement with the detonator, moves forward by its inertia and allows the catches to spring outwardly and free the detonator. A spring 8 or, as stated in the Provisional Specification, a spring catch, prevents accidental movement of the sleeve. To adapt the shell to be fired by a single impact, above water for example, means may be provided for enabling the sleeve 4 to be readily placed and held in such a position that it is clear of the retaining- catches 3. For this purpose, the sleeve may be provided with two notches (not shown) co-acting with a fixed pin so as to hold the sleeve in either of two positions, and with two other deeper notches into which the catches 3 may spring when the sleeve is pushed forward slightly and rotated. It is stated in the Provisional Specification that the sleeve and a suitable portion of the shell may be screw-threaded for the same purpose.
