Abstract
1,037,240. Fuzes for hand grenades. RHEINMETALL G.m.b.H. Dec. 1, 1964 [Dec. 18, 1963], No. 48801/64. Heading F3A. A fuze for a hand grenade, which can operate on impact or be set for delayed action, has a body 1 housing a primer 4 and a detonator 5 screwed into the body 3 of the grenade. During transport and storage, the fuze is protected by a cap 6 sealed by a ring 7 and held in position by two pins 22, which engage grooves 24 in the fuze body 1. To set the fuze for operation on impact, the cap is twisted clockwise and removed, and for delayed action the cap is twisted anti-clockwise and left on the fuze. A projection 25, Fig. 3, is aligned with a stud 26 when the cap is in the transport position. For action on impact, the fuze is provided with two mirror-image members 9, 10, Fig. 1, housed in a cylindrical cavity extending transversely of the fuze and thrust against conical bearing surfaces 13, 12 respectively by a spring 11, which surrounds a firing-pin 15 extending from the member 10 towards a primer 14 housed in the member 9. During transport the members 9, 10 are held apart by a pin 16, Fig. 3, thrust outwardly by a spring 18, but secured in the locking position by a conventional safety band 19 from which extends a grip 20 held against the body 3 of the grenade by a ring 41, removed before throwing, and by the cap 6. The delay means comprises a spring-loaded striker 28 pivoted on a pin 38, Fig. 3, and held away from a primer 32, Fig. 2, by a slide 30, Figs. 1 and 2; held against the body 1 by the band 19. The striker 28 is also secured by a bolt 39, Figs. 2 and 3, movable longitudinally on the grip 20 and held in the locking position by a spring 40. After the fuze has been set for impact action and the grenade thrown, the bolt 39 releases the striker 28 and, when the band 19 has unwound, the slide 30 drops, the striker then pierces the primer 32, which ignites a delay 33 communicating with primer 4 through a bore 34. Should the grenade be dropped accidentally after setting, flexible strips 37, Fig. 1, prevent the band unwinding. Strips 37 are of sheet metal or plastics and are attached to the fuze body at one end only. During setting for delay, a projection 35, Fig. 1, on the cap 6 pushes the slide 30 downwardly until a bend 36 in the slide frees the striker, which is still held by the bolt 39. By turning the cap in the reverse direction the slide 30 can be made to re-engage the striker. As shown in Fig. 3 a lever 43 is mounted on the grip 20. When the grenade is thrown, lever 43 is forced outwards by a spring 44 and by means of a wire 45 draws the bolt 39 out of engagement with the striker. Alternatively the grip 20 may be a doublearmed lever (not shown) tiltable longitudinally of the grenade body and having at its upper end a tongue which acts as the bolt 39.
