In a multi-feed cylinder and dial knitting machine having a plurality of pattern controlled side-by-side yarn guides. 27 at each feed, at least one dial needle is replaced by a yarn catch hook 32 which co-operates with the yarn guides to facilitate introduction of the yarn and is actuated in time with the yarn changing and knitting movements of the machine by an independent cam system 33 at each feed located further towards the centre of the dial than the normal dial needle cam systems. The dial needles have one or two butts acted on by cam tracks 20 or 20 and 19 respectively in dial cam cap 18. At each feed are pivoted the five yarn guides 27 of a striper unit 28 which includes a yarn trapper 31. Each guide 27 has a guide eye 28a and an actuator arm 30. Each hook 32 has a butt 32b engaging a track 36 in cam system 33 which is inside tracks 19 and 20. Hook 32 is operated to engage the yarn being inserted to ensure that it is taken by the needles, see paths (DL) and (CL) of the hook and needles, Fig. 2 (not shown). When the feeds, are placed closer together, catch hooks 32' and 32" of different lengths and having butts 32c, 32d occupy needle tricks 11a close to one another. Two cam systems are provided having tracks 49, 50 for butts 32c, 32d so that hooks 32', 32" operate at alternate feeds.
