Abstract

1,251,267. Wrapping wire on terminals. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. 9 May, 1969, No. 23745/69. Heading B3E. A wire-wrapping bit for stripping and wrapping a wire around a terminal comprises a rotatable portion 2 driven through a relatively fixed portion 3 the rotatable portion having at its forward end an axial bore to accept a terminal post 13 and means to enable an insulated wire 12 to be fed into a lengthwise channel 21 on said rotatable portion until it engages a flanged stopping member 4 on said fixed portion whereby on rotation of said rotatable portion the insulation is severed by the stripping means and bare wire is withdrawn through the bit and wrapped around a terminal post within the end of the bit and the severed insulation is ejected. The fixed portion 3 has a keyway for locking it in the wrapping gun against rotation and the stop flange 4 has a quadrantal extension 11 which partially encloses a shoulder 8 on the rotatable portion 2. The insulated wire 12 is fed through a jaw assembly comprising a collar 14 into which is fitted a first guide disc 15 having a contoured aperture 16, a second disc 17 having a slot 25 with cutting edges for stripping the wire both discs being aligned with a flattened channel 20 milled in the rotatable member and leading to the channel 21. An axial hole 27 passes through the jaw assembly and into the end of the rotatable portion 2 for receiving the terminal post. The collar 14 provides a controlled easy entry for the wire fed to the bit and prevents snatch. In operation when the inserted wire abuts the stop flange 4 it is trapped in the slot 25 of cutter disc 17 and cannot be withdrawn without stripping. Operation of the gun rotates the bit portion 2 which withdraws the wire through the severed sleeve back through the jaws and winds it tightly on the terminal post.
