Abstract

1,250,884. Air heaters. THORN HEATING Ltd. 28 Feb., 1969 [29 Nov., 1967], No. 54297/67. Heading F4S. An air heater suitable for use in a ducted central heating system comprises a heat exchanger transferring heat between two pressurized fluids which are separated by the wall of a combustion chamber 1 which is rotated about its longitudinal axis by a motor 4. Adjacent an end closure 2 is a stationary annular gas burner lead 5 with burner orifices 6 supplied with gas and air through a pipe 7 having a cooling air tube 10 thereabout which is disposed on the central longitudinal axis of the rotary cylinder 1. The open end of the cylinder mounts an annular bracket 13 which supports blades 14 providing a fan or pump arranged in a volute chamber 15 to draw the combustion products over the interior surface of the cylinder and expel them through the volute to atmosphere through a fire. Air to be heated is drawn through an inlet 22 into an annular passage 21 formed by a casing 20 spaced about the cylinder for exit through an outlet 23 which may be a volute chamber formed by radially disposed blades 24 forming a pump or fan which are mounted on the cylinder 1 within the outlet. Radially disposed stationary vanes 12 are mounted on the cooling tube 10 longitudinally of the cylinder to enhance contact of the combustion gases with the interior wall of the cylinder and air for dilution of the combustion products being exhausted through the chamber 15 are introduced through openings 17 therein from an adjacent chamber 16 via a spigot 18.
