A mixing and dispersing apparatus especially for paints and lacquers comprises a chamber having a plurality of inlet pipes as 30, 31 in its lower part, an agitator 20, a plurality of annular recesses as at 112, 113, 114 formed in detachably connected bodies and accommodating rotatable discs as 101, 102, 103, and an upper discharge chamber 42 (which may be transparent); there may be a baffle 41 below the discharge chamber. The agitator 20 may have vertical cutter blades as shown or be of propeller type (20a, Fig. 1, not shown) and is preferably rotated in the same sense as the discs. There may be two agitators 20 on horizontal or vertical shafts or perpendicular, and rotated in the same or opposite senses. The inlet pipes enter the chamber horizontally or vertically near its floor, discharge in close proximity to the agitator, are axially adjustable, and may have nozzles and be supplied by metering pumps. The faces and/or edges of the recesses and/or discs may be profiled; the discs may have vanes. Each recess may be formed by two annular members 115a, 115b which may be axially adjustable in an outer casing 221, to vary the distance between them, as by a rack and pinion device (see Fig. 5, not shown). There may be a steady bearing for the disc shaft at the level of the top annular member which may have perforations as may also the other members, see Fig. 6 (not shown). The apparatus may have cooling means.
