1,117,959. Mixing apparatus; liquid/liquid contacting apparatus. ISRAEL MINING INDUSTRIES-INSTITUTE FOR RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT. 20 April, 1966 [14 May, 1965; 25 June, 1965], No. 17364/66. Headings B1C and B1F. Mixing-A mixer for a mixer/settler apparatus comprises a vessel having a horizontal partition 3 merging into a draft tube 4, at least one rotatable mixing impeller 11 below the draft tube, at least one pumping impeller 12 within the tube arranged to raise liquid from the lower to the upper compartment, two inlets 5, 6 for liquid in the lower compartment and an outlet 7 in the upper compartment. The impellers 11, 12 may be adjustable or exchangeable and may have a common shaft 8 or separate shafts which may be coaxial. Settling-The mixed liquids are discharged into a collector tray 20 of a settler 16 and thence through an aperture 21 into a diffuser 22 of upright prismatic or circular shape, whence they diffuse between the partitions into the main portion of the settler. The lighter phase is then discharged from the peripheral duct 25 and the heavier phase at 26. The mixer and settler are connected by a by-pass 23 having a pressure sensitive closure 24 which opens if breakdown of the pumping impeller should cause rise in pressure in the mixing vessel. In a modification, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown) the mixer is located within the settler.
