Abstract

905,232. Continuous discharge mixing apparatus. COMPAGNIE DE SAINT-GOBAIN. Feb. 5, 1959 [Feb. 6, 1958], No. 4161/59. Class 86. [Also in Group I] In a mixer-settler apparatus the liquids are admitted by pipes 3, 4 to a pipe 14 shaped at 15 to conform to the shape of the rotating impeller 12 (see also Fig. 2, not shown) which has radial passages as at 13. The pipe 14 has ports 16 which may be shaped as curvilinear triangles, and are obturated by a sliding sleeve 17. The fluids are directed upwards by the impeller 12 and recirculate through the parts 16; circulation may be assisted by horizontal baffles 20, and by vertical baffles 19 which prevent the liquid from rotating bodily. The shaft 11 carries also an agitater 21. The apparatus may be used in the extraction of a solute from solution by means of a second solvent which is immiscible with the solvent of the solution. The mixing apparatus with its associated settling tanks 2 occupy a position in a row n in a series of rows forming a battery of mixer-settlers. The heavier liquid is received from row n + 1 by means of pipe 3 and the lighter liquid from row n- 1 through pipe 4. The mixed liquids are discharged by passage 5 into the settling tank 2 where separation takes place, the heavier liquid discharging by pipe 6 to row n - 1 and the lighter liquid by pipe 7 to row n +1.
