728,791. Treating solids with liquids. ZDANSKY, E. A. April 27, 1953 [May 12, 1952], No. 11597/53. Class 82 (1). In apparatus for washing dissolved or soluble substances out of sludges by repeatedly sedimenting the solids in counterflow to a washing liquid, comprising a vertical column 1 with a series of sedimentation zones A, B and C from each of which the solids pass through a conical member 4 and are then distributed over the next sedimentation zone by a distributer 5, a pipe or pipes 8 and an associated non- return valve are provided for conducting the washing liquid out of each sedimentation zone, and slurry may be withdrawn through the valve 17 for brief periods under automatic closure of the said valves. In an alternative form, the bottom of each sedimentation zone may comprise a number of cones arranged in honeycomb fashion and the pipe for carrying the liquid mounted between them. Washing liquid enters through pipe 16 and after final clarification in the cone 9 passes out by the overflow 10. The sludge is introduced into cone 9 through apertures 14.
