Abstract

In a process and apparatus for stirring and emulsifying liquids or mixtures of liquids with gases or solids, of high viscosity, i.e. in excess of 40 centipoises, the apparatus comprises at least three perforated radial stirrer vanes attached to a shaft which is mounted for rotary reciprocation. The vanes may be perforated plates or of grid form, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown); the total area p of the vanes occupied by holes or perforations is 20-80%. The shaft conveniently rotates alternately in opposite directions through an angle of 360/n degrees, where n is the number of vanes; 40-100% of the volume of the container is swept. The edge of the vanes furthest from the shaft should have a mean linear velocity of 1-5 f.p.s. The shaft and vanes may be hollow to allow of circulation of a heating or cooling medium. The process may be used in the manufacture of synthetic resinous polymers, antibiotics, paints and emulsions of all kinds.
