Abstract

1,249,188. Cables. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 10 Jan., 1969 [13 Jan., 1968], No. 1563/69. Heading H1A. A high voltage cable 1 comprises one or more conductors 5 embedded in a core of hardened foamed synthetic resin 4, e.g. polyurethane or polystyrene, surrounded by an insulating pipe 2 which may be made of P.V.C., polypropylene, polyethylene, polymethylmethacrylate, polycarbonate or polysulphone resin, and which has a conductive layer of lacquer 3 on its inner surface connected in use to one of the conductors 5, thus effectively increasing the diameter of the conductor and reducing electric stress. If the conductor 5 is of high resistance, to effect a current limiting function in the supply to an X-ray tube, for example, the layer 3 is also made of high resistance. The cable may comprise two conductors for use at similar potentials, e.g. in supplying the heater current to an X-ray tube cathode. A multicore cable may be formed from separate cables contained in an outer P.V.C. pipe with foam filling and an outer metal screen.
