Abstract

1,246,281. Zinc carbonate; zinc sulphate. COURTAULDS Ltd. 28 Jan., 1969 [29 Jan., 1968], No. 4470/68. Heading C1A. Zinc is recovered from an aqueous solution of a zinc salt by adding the solution to an aqueous solution of an alkal metal carbonate or bicarbonate until the pH of the mixture is in the range 6 to 7 forming a precipitate of granular zinc carbonate and leaving zinc ions in solution, then adding an aqueous alkaline solution to the mixture so as to raise the pH to at least 8 to precipitate as the basic carbonate some of the zinc remaining in solution,-which causes the granular carbonate to flocculate and settle. The preferred alkali metal carbonate is sodium carbonate and the aqueous alkaline solution added may be an aqueous solution of sodium carbonate. Before adding the alkaline solution to the mixture, carbon dioxide may be eliminated from it. The aqueous solution of the zinc salt may be the waste spin bath liquor from a viscose spinning process, in which the weight ratio of zinc to H 2 SO 4 is preferably at least 1 : 3. The comparative examples refer to the production of a basic zinc carbonate 3Zn(OH) a 2.- ZnCO 3 by adding the Na 2 CO 3 to the Zn solution and stirring to remove CO 2 , and a basic zinc sulphate 3Zn(OH) 2 ZnSO 4 by the addition of NaOH to solutions containing zinc sulphate.
