Abstract

1,245,998. Making heat exchangers; angular bending. SUNDSTRAND CORP. 20 Dec., 1968 [26 Dec., 1967 (2)], No. 60820/68. Headings B3A and B3E. A heat exchanger comprising a plurality of fins through which passes a continuous sinuous tube having straight sections, in 360 degree engagement with apertures in the fins, linked by oppositely directed bends 101 is made by stacking a plurality of fins 36 having apertures in alignment to form continuous openings through the stack and threading a tube back and forth through the stack. The tube is threaded through an opening and gripped by a pull head 15 and pulled through the opening, the pull head being mounted on a trolley 21 moved by a fluid-operated piston and cylinder 27, 26. The pull head has bars 71, Fig. 2, which have nuts 50 which engage a reversing device 16. At the end of a pull the reversing device grips the tube, which is released by the pull head, and turns it through 180 degrees around the member 54, Fig. 6 (not shown), the length of tube extending from the reversing device toward the stack of fins being sufficient to pass through the next opening and be gripped by a second pull head 18 on the far side of the stack. The first pull head is then reversed, engages the reversing device and pushes it toward the stack causing it to thread the tube through the next opening. A device 73, Fig. 3, comprises two arcuate ends 83, 84 which are separable by means of piston and cylinder assemblies 81, 79 and 85, 78. The tube passes through a guide 90 and around the annular groove formed by the ends 83, 84 in order to form the bends at each side of the stack. After a pull is complete and a bend formed the arcuate ends are separated and the stack indexed to present the next opening to be threaded with tube. The fins are preferably spaced by collars around the apertures but may also be threaded with tube and then spaced along the tube by means of a spreader comb, Fig. 12 (not shown). After the tube has been threaded into the fins it may be expanded, to ensure 360 degree engagement, by means of fluid pressure or by passing a ball through it. Alternatively the tube can be brazed to the fins.
