Abstract

1,258,881. Making filled heat-exchanger tubes; scanlng. AIR REDUCTION CO. Inc. 13 Jan., 1970 [21 Jan., 1969], No. 1608/70. Headings B3A, B3E and B3J. [Also in Division F4] An elongate continuously finned element e.g. of extruded aluminium, has a hub portion and two locking members all integral and correspondingly elongate with the fins, the element being clamped by means of the locking members to a tube e.g. of stainless steel. The hub portion may extend only halfway round the tube so that two co-operating finned elements are required, Figs. 4 and 7. The arrangement is intended for use as a heat exchanger. In Fig. 4, the longer of the two locking members 53, 54 extending from the hub portion 38 of each finned element, is folded over the shorter locking member of the other element. This is effected in a single two-stage operation by guiding the fin and tube elements between two sets of rolls. Fig. 7 shows the first stage rolls 120, 122 which effect a partial folding of the locking members 54 over the locking members 53. Fig. 8 (not shown) illustrates the second stage where the folding is completed. The tip portions of the fins are engaged and supported by the rolls as shown, during the bending operation. The roll drive is made reversible so that the finned tube can be re-run through the rolls if necessary. The roll forming mechanism may be utilized to effect snap coupling of the locking members (164, 165, Fig. 9).
