Abstract

1,245,831. Laminates. LANTOR Ltd. 10 July, 1969 [11 April, 1968], No. 17463/68. Heading B5N. A laminated fabric suitable for use in the production of electric heating pads or blankets is produced by placing a product comprising a fabric laminated solely by adhesive to a sheet of foamed natural or synthetic rubber or plastics material in contact with another product comprising a fabric laminated solely by adhesive to a sheet of foamed natural or synthetic rubber or plastics material so that the foam surfaces are in contact with each other and then laminating the products together, the fabric and sheet being laminated together by applying an adhesive material or potentially adhesive material to one face of the fabric and/or sheet and placing the fabric and sheet in contact with each other with the treated surface(s) innermost and forming the adhesive band by heat and/or pressure. Where the laminated fabric is used for an electric heating pad or blanket lamination of one foam surface to another may be effected in spaced apart lines disposed so as to accommodate an electric heating element, the foamed material preferably being thermoplastic or treated with a thermoplastic material and welding being effected by the application of heat and pressure suitably by high frequency welding in which the material is heated by the passage of a high frequency electric current. Alternatively lamination of the foam surfaces may be effected by means of an adhesive, bonding being effected over the whole surface or over discrete areas thereof. The fabric may comprise cotton, wool, viscose rayon, polyamide, polyester or polyacrylonitrile fibres and is preferably a stitch bonded or needle punched non woven fibrous web. In the case of needle punched webs these may be laid on woven or knitted reinforcing fabric and subsequently needle-punched. The sheet of foamed material may be of acrylonitrile-butadiene or styrene-butadiene copolymer, polyvinyl chloride or foamed polyester or polyurethane foam formed using a blowing agent or by heating air into a latex followed by drying and having closed cells or interconnecting cells. The adhesive used for laminating the fabric and foam sheet together may be applied as a solution or dispersion by spraying, brushing or knife coating or in the case of a pulverulent or granular material by scattering. Suitable adhesives are styrene-butadiene or acrylonitrile-butadiene copolymer latex, hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose, polyvinylidene chloride latex, polyethylacrylate latex, polyethylene granules or nitrocellulose.
