Abstract

1389201 Reinforcing edges; elastic textile laminates IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 22 Feb 1972 [22 Feb 1971] 5099/71 Headings B5K and B5N [Also in Division D1] In the manufacture of clothing, an elastic non-textile tape or sheet element is heat-bonded to a relatively inelastic textile element over at least 1% (preferably at least 10%), but not the whole of the juxtaposed area (at least one of the elements being adhesive on activation by heat), whilst the elastic element is extended from its relaxed state, the bonding zone(s) being totally confined within the bounds of the tape or sheet. The elastic element may be a natural or synthetic elastomer and may be foamed, e.g. a neoprene rubber, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, polyurethane or polyester foam; the foam may be open- or closed-cell and may be compressed or skeletal. The inelastic element may be a woven, knitted or non-woven textile; in examples a bonded non-woven fabric of bicomponent polyamide fibres and a woven cotton fabric are used. Prior to the bonding operation, the elastic element may be extended by at least 25% along one or more axes and heat-set in that condition; following or during bonding it may be relaxed to its original condition. A thermoplastic elastic element, e.g. thermoplastic polyurethane, may be bonded to thermoplastic fibres, e.g. polyamide, polyolefin, polyester, or non-thermoplastic fibres, e.g. cotton, wool, while a non-thermoplastic elastic element, e.g. natural rubber, may be bonded to thermoplastic fibres. Bonding may occur along continuous or discontinuous lines or along peripheral seams, or in discrete spaced zones, and may be performed by calender rollers, by dielectric heating, or by platen press, pressing rollers and plates being patterned. Dielectric heating is suitable when using polyesters, polyamides, neoprene rubber, polyvinyl chloride or certain filled or plasticized polyethylenes. The method may be used to produce waistbands, cuffs, sock tops, brassieres, girdles and smock waists. The two elements may only partially overlap.
