Abstract

793,632. Laminates. PRESSED STEEL CO., Ltd. March 15, 1956 [March 16, 1955], No. 7627/55. Class 140. Flexible laminated upholstery material consists of an outer covering 11 of leather, leather cloth, or a synthetic plastic coated fabric material, a layer 12 of a synthetic plastic or like foam material, and a fabric backing 13, e.g. calico, the whole being joined together by the application of heat and pressure at spaced zones where strips 14 of a thermoplastic or thermosetting material are located between the layers. The joining zones may follow a pattern. The strips or tapes, which may be of polyvinyl acetate or chloride, may be secured to the outer covering or backing or may be woven into the backing. The heating may be effected by steam, high-frequency induction, or electrical resistance elements. The foam padding may be polyvinyl chloride, polyurethane, or a polyester. An open woven fabric may be interposed between a plastic coated fabric outer layer and the remainder of the assembly, so that the plastic material of the outer covering is softened by the local heating and bonds with the strips or tapes.
