Abstract

1,237,447. Towing submerged bodies. FATHOM OCEANOLOGY Ltd. 3 Sept., 1969 [3 Sept., 1968], No. 41748/68. Heading B7V. [Also in Division B8] Apparatus for launching, towing and recovering a submersible body 6, e.g. a sonar device, comprises a winch 3 mounted in frame 1 on the towing vessel 2, an hydraulically-controlled sheave 25 for maintaining the towing cable tension constant, and a cradle 4 pivoted about the axle 17 of an outboard sheave 15. Cradle 4 comprises frames 16 on either side of sheave 15, a roller 21 on each frame engaging body 6, and a roller 23 between the frames 16 engaging the towing cable. When towing, cable 7 is paid out from winch 3, cradle 4 with body 6 pivots downwardly from its stowed position 34 into its launching position36and sheave25 pivots from its stowed position 35 into its operational position. As further cable is paid out, body 6 submerges and falls astern, roller 23 being held in engagement with the cable by the action of springs 18 pivoting cradle 4 upwardly. During towing, rollers 21 and plates 37 restrict lateral movement of the cable. Sheave 25 is carried by pivoted arms 27 controlled by cylinders 30 connected to accumulators 32, the pivots being arranged such that the mechanical advantage decreases as arms 27 pivot anti-clockwise, to compensate for increase in pressure in the cylinders. Sheave 25 is free to move laterally on its shaft 26 to align with the cable windings on the winch drum. When the cable is winched in, body 6 engages the cradle 4, sheave 25 is moved to position 35 by the increase in cable tension, and cradle 4 is pulled by the cable into its stowed position 34. Winch 3 is driven by an hydraulic or electric motor with an automatic brake.
