Abstract

1,236,841. Two-part couplings. AMP Inc. 18 Aug., 1969 [23 Sept., 1968], No. 41110/69. Heading H2E. An electrical connector comprises a body 2 having bosses 22, 24 near its end and a further body 4 having a hood 44 with radial extensions 50, 48 forming recesses 54, 52 to receive the bosses 22, 24 respectively. A locking ring 56 mounted on the hood 44 is rotatable about the axis of the hood to move the body 2 further into the hood and secure it therein by pressing against sloping rear faces 26 of the bosses. The body 2 contains socket contacts (12, Fig. 5, not shown) lying in axial through-passages 6 and crimped or otherwise secured to wires 14 retained on a flange 16 by a bundle strap 20. The body 4 contains corresponding pin contacts 32 in passages (30) and secured to wires 38. Both bodies 2, 4 are preferably moulded from a hard plastics such as a polycarbonate, polyvinyl chloride, nylon, or a modified polysulfone, and the ring 56 may be formed from a somewhat more rigid plastics or stamped from metal. In order to mount the ring 56 upon the hood 44, notches 68, 66 in the ring are aligned with the extensions 50, 48 whereupon the ring may be slid over the hood until on a level with slots (58, 60) running transversely through the extensions 50, 48. The ring may then be rotated by means of a hand tool so that an inner detent 70 on the ring is forced from axial groove 72 on the hood to groove 74. In this position, the ring is secured on the hood with notches (64, 62) aligned with the recesses 54, 52 to receive the bosses 22, 24, whereupon the ring may be further rotated by hand to move the detent 70 to another axial groove 76, releasably locking the body 2 in position. To polarize the two bodies, the boss 22 is made slightly wider than the boss 24.
