Abstract

1,097,280. Two-part couplings. AMP Inc. Feb. 23, 1966 [March 15, 1965], No. 7847/66. Heading H2E. The plug and socket parts 2, 4 of a multi-contact connector each comprise a rigid insulating disc 481, 48 bonded to a disc 461, 46 which is deformable to allow the rigid disc to be moved laterally between two positions, in one of which the contacts 6, 8 may be inserted through aligned bores in the discs and in the other of which the bores are tortuous so as to retain the contacts. The rigid discs 48<SP>1</SP>, 48 are movable laterally by rotating camming rings 80<SP>1</SP>, 80 which co-operate with ears 76<SP>1</SP>, 78<SP>1</SP>, 76, 78 of the discs. Each ring, e.g. 80 (Fig. 7, not shown), has grooves (88) which, under the action of a spring 86, engage projections (96) on the ears so as to lock the ring and the disc with the disc in either lateral position. The movable discs 48<SP>1</SP>, 48 may have bonded to them further deformable discs 52<SP>1</SP>, 52 bonded at their opposite ends to rigid discs 56<SP>1</SP>, 56, the deformable discs 52<SP>1</SP>, 52 having constrictions 62 to grip the leads. Slightly yieldable discs 42 have flanges 44 overlapping the discs 46<SP>1</SP>, 46 and are bonded on one side to those discs and on the other side to rigid discs 38<SP>1</SP>, 38 having shoulders 64 against which the contacts abut. The plug 2 has a soft sealing disc 58<SP>1</SP>. The sets of discs are mounted in shells 20, 21, that of the plug having a mounting flange 22, and an extension 24 with studs 36 which can be engaged in spiral grooves of a rotatable coupling ring 26 carried by the socket.
