Abstract

1,235,252. Bonded non-wovens. F.M.C. CORP. 20 March, 1969 [21 March, 1968], No. 14660/69. Heading D1R. [Also in Division C3] Binders for non-woven fibrous fabrics comprise chemically degraded mechanically disintergrated microcrystalline polyolefins which from stable dispersions in liquid media having a swelling action on the microcrystals, which liquid media may solvate the surface without destroying the crystallinity of the interior, said polyolefins exhibiting sharp X-ray diffraction patterns and being substantially atactic free. The polyolefin may be a polymer of ethylene, propylene, 3- methylbutene-1, 4-methylpentene-1, pentene-1, 3,3-dimethylbutene-1, 4,4-dimethylpentene-1, octene-1 or decene-1, oxidised with oxygen or a gaseous mixture thereof in the presence of a transition metal carboxylate, treated with a liquid swelling medium to remove atactic material and mechanically disintegrated. In Example 15 degraded disintegrated polypropylene is used as a binder for 1/4 inch cut rayon staple.
