Abstract

1,263,311. Absorbent pads. MEDICAL PLASTICS CORP. OF AMERICA. 27 Feb., 1969 [6 March, 1968], No. 10436/69. Heading A5R. A menses absorbing device comprises an absorbent core and, associated with the core, a non absorbent, liquid impervious antibacterial plastics material comprising a polymeric carrier having an antibacterial compound incorporated therein which on contact of the menses with the surface of the plastics material passes into the menses to act against bacteria therein. The polymeric carrier may be a polyolefin, a polyacrylate, an acrylonitrile-butadienestyrene copolymer or a copolymer of ethylene and vinyl acetate. The antibacterial compound may be 2, 2'-thio bis (4, 6 dichlorophenol), hexachlorophene, bis (3, 5, 6 trichloro-2 hydroxyphenyl) methane, or a bis (trialkyltin) sulphosalicylate. The antibacterial compound is incorporated in the carrier before extrusion or forming. The antibacterial plastics materials may be formed into perforated sheets (Figs. 3, 4, 5 not shown) and included as layers 18 between layers of fibrous cotton wadding 22 in the core with an imperforate sheet 19 of anti-bacterial plastics material on the sides of the core not contacting the body. In order to encourage the spread of fluid from the centre to the sides of the pad to achieve a more uniform absorption throughout the core, the perforations of the sheets 18 may be more numerous and larger (34, 36, Fig. 3) towards the edges than at the centre of the sheet (32). There may also be embossed channels (42, 44, 52, 54, Figs. 4, 5) to encourage the spread of fluid towards the edges of the sheet. The antibacterial plastics material may be formed into fibres and incorporated in a wadding core (12' Fig. 6 not shown) or woven into a fabric for use as a napkin cover 14.
