Abstract

1377801 Laminated diapers JOHNSON & JOHNSON 11 Jan 1972 1185/72 Heading B5N [Also in Division A5] A multi layer diaper comprises a porous facing layer 16 of water wettable mixed long fibres (between ¢ inch and 2¢ inches in length) and short fibres (less than about “ inch in length), a porous batt 14 of loosely compacted short cellulosic fibres such as wood pulp fibres or cotton linters (which may be blended with other fibres), said bolt having greater wettability than the facing and disposed in face to face juxtaposition with the facing, and a water impervious backing sheet 12 on the other side of the batt. The backing sheet, e.g. polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate, is adhered to the batt by bead lines 22 of adhesive running longitudinally down the length of the diaper, which is rectangular. The facing sheet overlaps the batt at the longitudinal edges and is also adhered to the longitudinal margin of the backing sheet by bead lines 22. The longitudinal edges of the facing sheet may be folded inwardly at the edges of the diaper, Fig. 3 (not snown). A second batt (20) of larger dimensions than the first batt may be placed in juxtaposition with the first batt to give a stepped appearance, Fig. 4 (not shown), and the backing sheet adhered to the second batt. Similarly one or more layers of creped cellulose wadding may be interposed between the batt 14 and the backing sheet, the ridges of the crepe running longitudinally. The facing layer comprises from about 75 to 98 weight per cent of short fibres, and from about 2 to 25 weight per cent of long fibres, the fibres being bonded by a water repellant polymeric bonding agent, e.g. a self crosslinking acrylic emulsion, and treated with a surfactant. The long fibres may be of rayon and the short fibres may be as used in the batt 14. The facing layer has a weight of about 1 to 5 ounces per square yard, and a density between about 0À05 and 0À1 gms. per c.c. The batt has a density between about 0À10 and 0À20 gms per c.c. The diaper may be folded longitudinally at its edges for use, there being tabs 4 (26) at the corners of one end, Fig. 6 (not shown), by which it can be folded around an infant.
