Heading D1W. A synthetic crimped yarn comprises two or more filaments having different flexual rigidities, the filaments(s) having the largest flexual rigidity comprising at least 10% wt of the yarn and having a flexual rigidity of less than 10 times the flexual rigidity of the other filaments in the yarn. The yarn is made from polyamide, polyester, polyolefin fibres or conjugated fibres containing polymers in concentric, eccentric or side-by-side arrangement and is crimped by false twisting, twisting/ heat-setting/untwisting, or by a stuffer box. The relationship between the total fineness (DMn) and total number (FMn) of the thickest filaments and the total fineness (DTn) of the crimped yarn may be defined by the equations: 0.1 DTn less than or equal to DMn less than or equal to 0.5 DTn and 3 less than or equal to DMn/FMn The torsional rigidity of the filaments with the largest flexual rigidity may be more than 5 times the mean torsional rigidity of the other filaments in the yarn. The filaments in the yarn can be of different thicknesses and the fineness of the thickest filaments can be at least 3 times that of the thinner filaments. The thickest filaments may be circular in crosssection and located near the centre of the yarn and the other filaments may be irregular in cross section. The thermal shrinkage of the thickest filaments may be at least 2% larger than that of the other filaments in the yarn. The yarns may be plied to produce a plied yarn having an air content of more than 100%.
