Abstract

1,213,701. Forming bulked yams; plied yarns. J. P STEVENS & CO. Inc. 20 March, 1968 [10 May, 1967], No. 13517/68. Headings D1F and D1W. A method of bulking continuous multifilament thermoplastic yarns includes the step of correlatively controlling the speed of the yarns passing in contact with at least one heated surface, the tension on the yarns and the temperature of the heated surface to maintain the tension lower than the dynamic retractive force on the yarns so that shrinkage of some only of the filaments occurs with consequent convolutions of the others, the convoluted and shrunk yam being then merged and plied with another yarn. The yam may pass in contact with two heated surfaces prior to merging with the other yam, the first heated surface having a temperature in the range 150-400‹F. and the second a temperature in the range 300-600‹F. The yarn is caused to travel at 100-1500 feet per minute under a tension in the range 0.05 to 5 grams. The multifilament thermoplastic yarn is one selected from the group-polyamides, polyesters, acrylics, polyolefins and tri-acetates. The other yarn is selected from the groupcotton, flax, rayon, wool, texturised or untexturised thermoplastic yarns. Apparatus for carrying out the method comprises a yam feeding means 3, a heated surface 15, a yarn receiving means 5, a speed regulating means 33, 35 operatively connected to the yarn receiving means, temperature regulating means 19 operatively connected to the heated surface, tension regulating means 13 positioned upstream of the heated surface, merging means 23 located downstream of the heated surface for merging the multifilament yarn 1 with the other yarn 25, and plying means for twisting the merged yarn composite as it is received on the yarn receiving means.
