Abstract

1,229,762. Radiation burner. K. KRIEGER. 26 Jan., 1970 [3 Feb., 1969], No. 3691/70. Heading F4T. In a radiation burner having a precombustion chamber 3 and a permeable burner head 4, the burner head comprises an insulating layer of heat resisting and/or fireproof material 5 (20) provided with passage apertures 10 (21) which serve as combustion gas inlets, and a heat radiating surface 7 which is played upon by hot combustion gases and is located towards the outer side of the burner head, consisting of one or more moulded bodies, presenting or forming cavities H, outlets 11 (23) leading from these cavities in such a way that the hot combustion gases flowing from these outlets impinge upon the outside of an adjacent region of the heat radiating surface, so that the heat radiating surface is heated from both outside and inside. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the precombustion chamber 3 of the burner is linked to the heat radiating surface 7 by the passage apertures 10 in the insulating layer 5. The heat radiating surface 7 is composed of individual moulded blocks 6, of triangular cross-section, forming cavities H, arranged in a staggered fashion to each other. Combustion takes place in the cavities H, and the hot gases issue from the outlet apertures 11 formed by the open ends of the moulded bodies 6, and impinge upon the outsides of the adjacent moulded bodies, so that each moulded body is heated not only outwards from within by the combustion gases, but also from the outside. Various other embodiments are described, e.g. Fig. 5, in which the moulded bodies 6 are replaced by others of different cross-section e.g. 22, and which may have further holes 24 in the wall of the moulded body. Examples in which the moulded bodies are arranged in a parallel, rather than staggered, fashion are described (Figs. 6 and 7, not shown). Also, the heat radiating surface may be formed completely of one moulded body (e.g. (15), Fig. 4, not shown), the cross-sectional profile of which is an alternating series of projections (15a) and recesses (15b).
