Abstract
1,228,248. Headbox for papermaking machine. BELOIT CORP. 13 May, 1968 [17 Jan., 1968], No. 22584/68. Heading D2A. A headbox for supplying stock to a papermaking machine comprises a slice chamber having a transverse cross-sectional area which decreases in the direction of flow of stock, a slice opening in the downstream end of the slice chamber, and a plurality of trailing flexible elements positioned in the chamber and forming convergent channels therein, and means for anchoring the elements in the chamber with their downstream portions unattached and free-floating. The elements may be sheets, circular or triangular rods, wires or threads. The flexibility of the elements preferably increases in the direction of flow of stock. The elements may comprise a plurality of rigid members, e.g. plates or tubes, extending in the direction of flow of stock, and a plurality of flexible trailing elements attached to the downstream ends of the rigid members. These trailing elements may be fibres or monofilaments. The cross-section of the elements may decrease in the direction of flow of stock, and the elements are preferably neutrally buoyant. As shown, a rectangular pre-slice flow chamber 11b is separated from the slice chamber 11a by a perforated plate 15 having rows of perforations 15a, 15b, 15c &c, with land areas in between, the flexible, converging trailing elements 25, 26, 27 &c, being attached to the land areas. On the other side of the plate, stiff plates 19, 20, 21 &c, are attached to the lands, the upstream ends of the plates carrying rods 22, 23, 24 &c transverse to the liquid flow.
