Abstract

1444871 Making non-woven webs of synthetic fibres GLASWERK SCHULLER GmbH 5 Feb 1974 [8 Feb 1973] 05297/74 Heading D2A Apparatus for making a non-woven web of synthetic fibres, e.g. glass fibres, comprises a receptacle I for accommodating an aqueous suspension of the fibres, a liquid-permeable band 6 arranged to travel upwardly across the outlet 3 of the receptacle so that a web 9 is laid down on the band, liquid being drained through the band by suction boxes 7, and a plurality of turbulence-creating members 12, 15, arranged side by side in at least one row, extending into the suspension, at least some of the members having passages through which filamentary material 18 is passed, the filamentary material becoming embedded in the web 9 to strengthen it. As shown in Fig. 1 the members 12 are solid rods of circular section mounted on a transverse comb-like element 10 which is pivotally adjustable. The members 15, which are also mounted on a transverse element, are tubular. The material 18 is fed from supply spools 17 through the members 15 to the suspension. By pivotal adjustment of the members 15, the turbulence they create, and thus the depth of the filamentary material in the web 9, can be controlled. In a modification (Figs. 3, 4), the tubular members 32a, 32b passing the filamentary material 31a, 31b are arranged in two rows alternately with solid members 33a, 33b and the material is fed through water flowing in the members 32a, 32b. If the water is fed at high pressure, the filamentary material can be accelerated to a speed higher than the suspension with the result that the filamentary material is embedded in the web in a bowed or wavy configuration.
