In a solid fuel fired boiler having a fire bed supporting plate 9, air for combustion is supplied by a fan 13, and a flap 14 is counterweighted so as to be biased to a position closing the air inlet. When the fan 13 is running, the flap 14 opens against the bias, and stops 17, 15 adjust the open and closed positions of the flap. Secondary air enters a gallery 18 at the rear of grate through an opening 19 when the fan is running, and is fed above the fuel bed through low resistance openings 21. Inlets 22 from the exterior enable a small amount of secondary air to enter the combustion chamber when the fan is not running.
