Ceramic bodies having a dense vitrified structure and less than 4% closed pore volume are produced by firing a ceramic composition in the form of a pre-shaped coherent mass containing clay and including fusible and/or glassforming components in the presence of hydrogen at the peak firing temperature. The invention is applicable to steatite, cordierite, alumina-enriched porcelain, zircon porcelain or electric insulator porcelain bodies, which may be shaped by conventional plastic moulding and initially prefired in air below vitrification temperature, or in air followed by nitrogen, before the firing in hydrogen. For example, firing in air up to 1100‹ C. may precede firing in hydrogen to 1200‹ C., cooling, and then re-firing to 1250‹ C. The invention also applies to glazing porcelain or other ceramic bodies, the unfired body being coated with a ceramic glazing composition and the coated body vitrified and matured in a hydrogen atmosphere.
